Is it football season yet?

I don't know why, but I suddenly can't wait for football season. Maybe it's because I just ordered my tickets for the MSU game. Now I just need to keep my fingers crossed and hope that I actually get them. You would think that once you've paid for tickets it's a done deal, but that's not necessarily the case. We will see...

So to anyone reading this, mark your calendars for September 17th. I'm officially declaring the ND vs. MSU game as THE GAME for this year. I'll already be there for the Film Department reunion, so we might as well make it a Keenan/ACE/Family reunion as well.

See you there!

Famous people and 80's Rock

Friends often ask what famous personalities I've seen since moving to LA, and I usually have to admit that I haven't met too many. I mean, hanging out with The Govanator, Fergi, and Mr. Belding have really been my only claims to fame. Until now.

This past Monday I was hanging out with some of my friends at a Karaoke place, as I often do. We were talking and munching on pretzels when someone new pulled up a chair and introduced himself to everyone at the table. Apparently his friends were on singing on stage at that point, so he was just looking for someplace to sit. We're all pretty friendly there, and people come and go from tables all the time--no big deal.

As we were watching his friends goof around on stage Mark leaned over and whispered, "You know how that is, right? That's Lex Luther." Ah, I knew I recognized him from somewhere. I was thinking I had just seen him around before, but I actually just knew him from Smallville.

Anyway, Michael (aka, Lex) turned out to pretty good guy. We sometimes forget that movie stars are just normal people with a little bit of extra fame. He and his friends stuck around for a while and sang some 80's soft rock. They even gave us high five's (and some encouragement) after we sang an "interesting" rendition of "Beauty and the Beast."

Good times. Good times.

"Take a picture of me" Part 2

Okay, here's the moment you've been waiting for. I know your week wouldn't be complete without seeing pictures from my trip home, so here you go. Enjoy!

At Nora's Graduation party

Steve and Stu planning to hijack the root beer keg.

Nora and friends at their graduation.

More grad pictures with friends.

Eating dinner after a very long ceremony. Dad is apparently taking a picture of me taking a picture (again).

It's Steve's Birthday. Can you guess how old he is? (Or why he is climbing up an emergency staircase...)

Too much fun in one weekend for Walter and Steve.

Dad enjoys a beautiful day at the beach.

As the weekend draws to a close, there's always time for a few s'mores by the campfire.

Have a great weekend!

Now that one I felt...

Don't worry, guys. I'm still here. That's right, I've made it through my first earthquake. Originally it was rated a 5.3, but I just read on the news that it was actually a 4.9.

It was quite an experience. Everyone at work knew what it was right away--it took me a couple of seconds to figure out. One of my neighbors was yelling, "Hey, it's an earthquake!" Then I yelled back, "Oh no! What do I do?" By the time I found a doorway to stand under, it was already over.

Let's just hope I we don't have too many more of those, and that they stay far, far away. I've been kind of obsessively checking the US Geological Survey website for the rest of the day. Theoretically it can tell you when and where to expect big quakes. A lot of good it did on this one, since I don't think anyone was really expecting it.

In other news, I just got back from a great weekend back home. I've got lots of great pictures from Nora's graduation and Steve's b-day. I'll try to post them sometime here in the next few days. Here's one to hold you over in the meantime:

Let the fun begin...

It'll just be a few more days before I head home for the festivities. Nora graduates this Saturday, and the open house is on Friday. As it happens, Saturday is also Steve's 21st birthday. Needless to say it's going to be a fun weekend. It looks like it's time to break out the HC shirts again...

Yes, we're cool like that. Just wait until you see the new shirts!

Part III: The Odyssey Concludes

At last, here is the long awaited conclusion of my three-day weekend. It only took me the whole week to get to it...

First of all, let me say that I really like Mexico, but I never wanted to drive over there. It scares me that all of the signs are in Spanish and there are often no lines on the roads or indications of one-way streets. Or maybe there are indications, but I just can't read them. Either way, I wasn't planning on driving into TJ on Saturday.

As my bad luck would have it, we somehow missed the turn to park before the border. I was expecting some kind of exit, but the only way to avoid crossing the border was a turnaround from the left lane marked with a very small sign. So I was just driving south looking for a place to park when all of the sudden everything was in Spanish. I said to Ryan, "I think we accidentally went into Mexico." He said, "No way, we would have had to stop at the border or something."

But there we were, and so the adventure began. Lets just say it's a lot easier to get into Mexico than to get out. Of course I knew that from living in Brownsville for two years, but we always just walked across and rarely had to deal with waiting in lines.

It was quite a process to find the right line to get back to the US. First we got into what we thought was the line (we were following arrows that said U.S.A.). It turns out that was a special bus line and the nice Officer made us get out of it. We tried to follow his directions to the right place but somehow ended up and a freeway going to who knows where. After a bit of effort we finally managed to turn around and get in the correct line, only to wait for another two hours before making it back to the good ol' US of A.

Here are a few pictures to document all of the fun:

I told Ryan not to antagonize the nice officer, but all he did was laugh at him. This guy doesn't look amused...

It's just like Disneyland, except there's no fastpass and everyone looks like they want to hurt me.

As we were waiting in line Ryan did his first good deed for the day by helping this guy push his car back to the US. The second good deed came a few minutes later when he let some other people borrow his phone after they had run out of gas.

As you can see it was a most eventful day. After that we drove back to LA and took it easy on Monday. We went down to Hollywood and Highland to see the obligatory sights. Then it was back to my apartment for a little cookout.

That's about it. Ryan, thanks for visiting! To anyone else in the audience: If you fly out to Cali for a visit, you too could end up here on holden-corbett.com....
